About Melissa
When did you first discover your love for crochet, and what sparked your passion?
As a child, my Grandmother Ruth taught me to knit when she realized I couldn’t sit still. I’ve always loved yarn and creating, but crochet was tricky — I couldn’t get the hang of it after eight attempts from her. When she passed in 2023, I picked up a hook and magically could crochet! I truly believe she left me her abilities.
How has your crochet style or focus evolved since you started crocheting after your grandmother’s passing?
Since 2023, I’ve completed lots of projects. I started with blankets to learn new techniques and stitches, which led me to sweaters and cardigans — my favorite things to create! After losing my corporate career at a yarn manufacturing facility in January 2025, I needed a new challenge, so plushies became my focus.
What inspires the designs and colors you choose for your sweaters and plushies?
I’ve always loved LOADS OF COLOUR! The more, the better. I let the colors tell me what design they want to be — certain yarns just work better with specific designs.
What’s your favourite part about creating your crochet pieces?
My favourite part is seeing the joy on someone’s face when they see my products in person for the first time — whether that’s a sweater, plushie, or summer wearable.
Outside of crochet, what else in your life influences or feeds your creativity?
Yarn shopping, LOL. I love thrifting, and if the thrift shop has some yarn, you know I'm combing through it!
How has your journey through career changes, personal loss, and embracing crochet full-time shaped who you are today — both as an artist and a person?
Life has been a whirlwind. Losing a career I loved was a shock — I thought my receptionist job was safe, but it wasn’t. The silver lining was stepping away from the chaos and focusing on crochet full-time in 2025 to sharpen my skills.
The loss of my grandmothers was devastating. My maternal grandmother, Muriel, was my best friend — we did everything together, from shopping to adventures to knitting in winter. I miss her every day.
My paternal grandmother, Ruth, was an amazing influence — a teacher for nearly 40 years with a huge heart. She volunteered, donated, and crafted endlessly, making gifts for friends, family, and charity. She inspired my generous spirit; I love using my skills to brighten someone else’s day.
What do you hope people feel or take away when they wear or cuddle your creations?
I want them to feel the love I poured into each stitch and the anticipation of the joy they’ll feel touching my creation for the first time.
If you could describe your crochet brand or style in three words, what would they be?
Colourful, unique, happy.
What’s one memorable moment or piece that has stood out to you since you started your crochet journey?
A recent highlight was making 25 plushies for our local Police Precinct. It made me feel close to my grandmothers — I know they’d be proud.
Something else that comes to mind is creating an entire Summer Collection in 2025 (Whispers Of Summer), for an event in Niagara-on-the-Lake; it may not have sold as well as I wanted it to, but that's okay. It wasn't my products, it was Mother Nature being a B. You would think that May 30th & 31st would be warm, right? Jokes on me, people were wearing their winter coats that weekend. Creating a collection specific to an event has always been a dream, and I was so proud to accomplish that.
What’s your dream for your crochet brand in the next few years?
I want to keep creating joy for myself and others. Crocheting and knitting are incredibly therapeutic for my brain, and if I can brighten someone’s day, that’s a win.
